Greg Fromholz Answers SoJo’s “What is an Evangelical?” with the film “Evangelical in a Box” (by cathleen falsani)
Over time I have become more comfortable with defining myself as an Evangelical Christian - there is a rich heritage that I associate with when I use the term Evangelical. Sadly, there are many negatives that people associate with the term as well....

Heartbreaking Encounter
Tonight I was riding home from work and encountered a situation that would trouble any soul.
I was on my bike and going through a school. A few young guys stopped me and alerted me to a lady sitting on the school roadway nearby - it had just been raining heavily so she was sitting in the wet. They said they had first seen her lying down so they were calling the police.
I decided to ride on and...

– For my 1000th post on this iteration of my blog, I give the floor to the words of the great Russian author, Fyodor Dostoyevksy. This is from his supreme literary achievement, The Brothers Karamazov, which I am currently reading. I give these words honour because it is this vision that he paints...

– 1 John 3:16-18 (NIV)
The good news of God (the Gospel) is not a refined sales pitch designed to convert people, it’s the active demonstration of God’s intention for his world and we are challenged to live it.

Govt's sell off-firms are top performers -... →
If the government is going to enter into a partial sale of these assets it, and its supporters, need to stop using the ideological argument that it’s about companies running better under private ownership than state ownership - there are plenty of examples where the evidence shows otherwise and it looks like the figures show that these assets are high performers under their current model....

– Christopher Hitchens (via kateoplis)
Except he misses that scripture IS literature. The problem is that with the fundamentalist in any religion (and in the West we most sharply see it in Christianity) the rule book metaphor rather than the metaphor of story, dominates the view of scripture (and...

I Love this Difference
The two David’s running for the leadership of the Labour Party here in New Zealand recently did a general interest interview with the New Zealand Herald. One of the questions was about their worst plane trip. I love the difference in the answers.
David Cunliffe: A run of about eight rough landings in Wellington. “One of them was just appalling, the sort where people are throwing up...

Reshaping my Story
Yesterday was my first day sporting a new look at work. Up until now I’ve been pretty relaxed and quite slack about how I look at work. Recently I decided to ‘up’ my standards so to speak and have turned to a relatively minimalist look with simple business shirts, dress pants, dress belt and dress shoes - the standard wear for those who work in offices.
For many in the workforce...

Millions vote in landmark Egypt elections - Middle... →
In Egypt they’re fighting and working hard for the right to tick a box on a piece of paper to freely and fairly elect a government…. while we just had our lowest voter turnout in New Zealand in a very long time. We don’t know how good we’ve got it and what others are giving up and going through for this simple right to vote. This is why I take politics so seriously. People...
